One of my favorite parts of living in San Diego is the lively restaurant scene and food culture. It seems like every other week a new restaurant opens, with its announcement underscored by some high-profile chef’s name or signature dish.
When I started seeing more and more photos of TRUST Restaurant (specifically, its scenic outdoor patio nestled against an apartment building on Park Blvd) in my Instagram feed, I knew I had to go. So, this past Sunday, my friend Sarah and I met for brunch at TRUST; we had both been eyeing the spot for a while and were anxious to give it at try.
Located at 3752 Park Blvd. Suite 105C, in Hillcrest, this spot is as well-placed as it is delicious. Self-described as serving “urban rustic food with the addition of wood fire cookery,” the brand promise of TRUST is simple: in good food we trust.
The brunch menu is expansive, yet unique, with twists on classic breakfast orders like the breakfast sandwich (TRUST makes theirs with prosciutto) and the vegetarian omelette (goat cheese elevates the richness); even a brussels sprouts toast! View the full brunch menu, as well as lunch and dinner, here.
Sarah and I sat outside: it was a beautiful day, but the covered patio setup offered cool temperatures without too much sun.
When it came time to order, I confessed to the waiter (Jason, who was awesome) that I was torn between the chilaquiles, which is one of my go-to brunch dishes, and the pancakes and fried chicken. A pained look crossed his face: “Oooh that’s a tough decisions.” But then, he went on to explain that the pancakes and fried chicken was his favorite item on the menu, and he recently served a chef who upon having the dish said it was the “best brunch dish she’d ever had.” Um… sold! He did such a good job of convincing me that Sarah ended up changing her order to the pancakes and fried chicken too!
Suffice it to say, we did not regret our orders. Unlike a traditional chicken and waffles dish, this one from trust comes with tender chicken pieces, marinated in garlic and chilis. The saltiness and crunchiness of the chicken is complemented by three vanilla pancakes, served with savory honey butter and house walnut syrup… Are you drooling yet?
If you’re looking for a standout brunch dish unlike anything you’ve ever tried, you have to visit TRUST Restaurant and order the pancakes and fried chicken. Don’t believe me? See it for yourself on their Instagram.
